Inside or outside does not matter.
I would keep away from an active fireplace for the 1st 6 months.
The bear will crack. It cracks more if it dries out to fast. The Fireplace would dry it out to fast.
After it is dry it will not matter.
Also see the care instructions again at. Link to Care

My Carving has cracks. What can I do?
The hard answer is Nothing.
If your carving is older than 6 months it is most likely done drying. Carvings as they dry lose water and thus weight. This weight translates to lost size. the shrinking causes cracks. As the humidity in your home or outside changes the carving will grow and shrink. If you fill the cracks it will cause the carving to crack more as it expands and grows as the water content changes.
If you have to do something then paint it. Buy some brown or black spray paint and repaint the bear. THis will make the cracks less noticable.

How do I take care of my chainsaw carving?
Most wood bears / carvings will crack. We carve out of green or wet wood. To carve out of dry wood would time alot longer and damage the saws. The water in the green wood acts as a lubricant with the bar lubricant. As the wood dries it shrinks and thus cracks.
If you have bought a bear from us please do the following to care for it.
To keep the cracking to a minimum please give the bear 3 more coats of Polyurathane or Clear Spray Paint.
If you bought the bear somewhere else you need to know what the carver put on it. If it is an oil finish then you should be able to follow my instructions. If it is an water based finish continue to use an water based top coat but not to much.
Please call or email with any questions.

What is the difference between Aspen and Lodgepole Pine?
Aspen is Darker wood than Lodgepole Pine. It is the most popular wood we manufacture with. The colors are tan to brown and can have a very large amount of Character. We are more than happy to take custom orders with requests ranging from light Aspen to very Darker and Wormy. Wormy - meaning having lots of bug and worm tracks on the surface of the wood. Aspen has more curves, knots and texture than Lodgepole Pine. Aspen is Slightly more expensive than Pine. This is because we have to sand the Aspen to keep it from having splinters.
Lodgepole Pine or Lodge Pole Pine is a hard, very dense pine. It grows very slow due to the altitudes it is found at. 8,000 - 11,000 ft. When we build Log Beds out of Lodgepole Pine the beds have a straighter look than Aspen. It is also the species being killed by the Pine Beetle. We work with it as Clear Pine and Beetle Kill Pine. Lodgepole Pine is slightly less expensive than Aspen. This is because we can just peal it. We do not have to sand it.
